This is a sturdy self-contained raised garden bed system that has approximately 25SF of planting space and a composting hole hidden in the center of the garden bed - convenient for having a place for discarding weeds AND capturing extra nutrients for feeding your plants. These systems are often used with growing greens, herbs, or focusing on a specialty crop. With successional plantings throughout the growing season, one could grow 28-45lbs of fresh food!
Using milled lumber sourced from our Edge restoration projects, our custom raised beds have an attractive organic look, and are great for increasing planting space, especially in areas where you are unsure about what's in your soil. Most common size is 4' wide x 8'long x1' deep, giving you 32SF of planting space.
These plants provide the greatest benefits when planted in groups for pollination, privacy screening, harvesting and habitat benefits.
A swiss armyknife of shrubs. Native, habitat support for songbirds, butterflies, moths, tree frogs, and wild turkeys. Delicious nuts, biomass, basketting material, erosion control and more. These do well when transplanted 3-4' spacing for obtaining the hedgerow effect. Be forewarned - in urban settings, it's common for the squirrels to harvest the nuts before people.
A native planting's reliable best friend. The quick-growing shrub provides critical shrubland edge habitat support for migrating birds to nest-in and refuel while on their migratory route. The fruits and edible and medicinal as well as the flowers! They can tolerate partial shade, but will provide the most yield potential when sited in full-sun.. Space plants 3-4' apart for obtaining the hedgerow effect. These grow well in companionship to hazelnuts.
This is actually a kind of Viburnum, not a true cranberry. These shrubs showcase dense foliage with beautiful white flower clusters that yield drupes of edible tart flavorful berries. When left on the shrub, the berries add winter interest and provide nutritious forage for birds. Another outstanding plant that supports songbirds and other wildlife throughout the year. When spaced close together, they create another excellent hedgerow.
Thrive in full sun and moist soils. Native. Fast-growing. Super versatile. When actively pruned and harvested, these willows grow more like a dense shrub with greenish to orange stems. If left alone, it will continue to mature into a medium-large tree. Useful in establishing living fences, basketting material, erosion control, mushroom inoculation logs and more. Transplant 1'-3' spacing for a hedgerow effect, or as far apart as you need.
Why not garden with mushrooms too? These are as close as you get to having a crop that is a set-it-and-forget it 'til harvest. Place these in the shady part of your yard. Add these nutritional powerhouses to your garden space. Logs are sustainably collected, cut into 36" lengths and then Inoculated with cold-hardy strains of edible mushrooms.
